How Does Tinder Top Picks Work?  

Top Picks was a feature added to Tinder in 2018. 

This feature curates a list of potential matches deemed to be most suitable for you, based on the information entered in your profile and your swiping behavior.  

At the time of writing, you can access it via the Tinder Gold tab within the app (although this could change as the design of the app is always evolving).

If you have a free account or a Tinder Plus membership, you’ll be able to access one top pick per day. With a Tinder Gold or Tinder Platinum membership, you’ll be shown more, typically between four and ten every day. It’s also possible to purchase extra Top Picks, no matter what subscription you have or how many Top Picks you’ve already seen on any given day.  

Some Top Picks are presented with a small one-word badge explaining why they’ve been chosen. The badge might say ‘Foodie’, ‘Traveler’ or some other personality trait the person has in common with you, for example.     

You can swipe left or right on your Top Picks, or give them a Super-Like (if you have any available). Either way, your top picks will reset every day.

How are Top Picks Chosen?

Tinder is incredibly secretive about how Top Picks are chosen. Indeed, the company rarely reveals anything about any of its algorithms.

The only official hint revealed by the company is that your top picks are chosen based on the information in your profile.

You can expect your Top Picks to meet the age and distance restrictions you’ve listed in your Tinder settings. It’s common that your Top Picks will share one or more of the ‘Passions’ listed in your Tinder bio too. It has also been suggested that the Top Picks algorithm might consider deeper aspects of your bio, such as your job or education.

If this is the case, it’s in your best interests to fill out as much information about yourself in your bio as possible. This will increase the chances of the Top Picks algorithm finding your dream partner. – or that you’ll be featured as other people’s Top Pick! 

While this hasn’t been confirmed, it’s entirely possible that your swiping behavior could also influence your Top Picks. If you’re constantly swiping right on a certain demographic of person, there’s every chance that this type will appear in your Top Picks more often.

How Do I Become A Top Pick? 

Unsurprisingly, Tinder hasn’t revealed any tips about how to become a Top Pick. With that said, filling out your bio to the maximum is likely to help, as is being a regular user of the app. 

Although this is only speculation, it’s a safe bet that popular profiles are most likely to be chosen as a Top Pick. If you’re getting plenty of right swipes and Super Likes, you’re surely more eligible to be recommended to others in this way. After all, Tinder wants Top Picks to be valuable experience, and showing a profile that no-one likes isn’t going to impress anyone. Granted, this isn’t great advice, as everyone is already crafting their profile to attract as many right-swipes as possible.

There’s no way to know for sure that you’ve been chosen as a Top Pick, unless someone sends you a screenshot to confirm it.

Is Top Picks Worth Paying For?

Top Picks is one of many useful features that come with a Tinder Gold or Tinder Platinum subscription.

In my opinion, it’s far from the most useful though. 

The ability to access unlimited right swipes and see who has already matched you are far more effective for quickly landing you a date.

Of course, if a compatible personality really is that important to you, this feature is a nice bonus to make use of.    

I would imagine that’s all it’s seen as by most users though; a nice bonus, rather than their sole reason for buying the upgrade.

I wouldn’t recommend paying for extra Top Picks, as they reset every day and you’ll theoretically find them all by swiping through the Tinder pack anyway.

Final Thoughts

The Tinder algorithm has been criticized for not being as personality-based as other dating apps, and the launch of Top Picks may well have been in response to these criticisms.

The potential to be recommended as a Top Pick might inspire some users to fill out more information in their bio. However, the ability to access extra Top Picks is hardly a major reason to buy Tinder Gold or Tinder Platinum.

Still, you might enjoy playing with it if you’re a Tinder user who has already upgraded to Gold or Platinum.
